God’s Spirit dwells powerfully in children, and if we’re tuned in, He can be seen and heard through them. Jesus made this intriguing statement: “”See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10) When I think about what Jesus said about how children’s “angels always see the face of my Father,” a rush of memories I’ve had with children—bubble up within my soul.
There was one child in particular, who inspired this devotional.
I was taking her to a ball game and on the way, she was singing—over and over again—the song, “Pray.” Mid-song, she suddenly stopped singing, and in her cute Texas accent said, “I know your music comes from God because I love it, and it makes me happy!” I nearly stopped the car. It was profoundly humbled. She had taught me something she probably didn’t even fully grasp. I was humbled because through her expression I realized the song God gave me a song that had touched a soul who was touched by HIM. In the darkness, she couldn’t see the tears rolling down my cheeks. I knew I had so much to learn about the special relationship between God and children.
The very next day God taught me something I’ll never forget.
If children have an angel who is constantly viewing the face of the Heavenly Father, then they have THE connection with God—that we long to possess. Maybe that’s why people are so inexplicably drawn to a baby’s smile. This connection with God that we see in children—it can be ours—but our heart must be as wide open as a child’s so we are able to receive it. You see, prior to stating this truth, Jesus said, “unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4)
Sweet Bailey reminded me what it looks like to live in the wonder of God. It made me want to strip away the reservations I regularly place on my expressions of love. When I’m childlike—I KNOW God’s love, and thus, it diminishes my fear of being hurt.
When we’re in love with God, we are freed from fear and live like children who have an angel constantly viewing the face of the Heavenly Father.
