God’s love is the most steadfast love we will ever experience, and when we meditate on the many ways He shows His extraordinary love to us, we never want to abandon Him for a lesser love. The 107th chapter of Psalms begins, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” (‭vs. 1‬) Throughout the entire chapter, the Psalmist explains what God’s “steadfast love” looks like for different situations.

For example, what does God’s steadfast love look like for one who is wandering in the desert of despair—maybe even on the edge of suicide? When they cry out to God, He gives their heart a place to call home and fills every God-shaped desire He placed within them by giving them himself. (4-7) Verse 9 says: “he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. (9)

Have you experienced His satisfaction?

Or, are you still a running rebel as I was? God’s steadfast love will chase you down.

For the rebel who has turned his back on God and finds himself in darkness, afraid of the shadow of death, afflicted in the prison of sin, with no one who will help, God’s love is our rescuer. (9-12) When “they cried to the Lord in their trouble, he delivered them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart.” (13-14) Yes! He wants to free us.

In fact, He even shows His goodness to the wicked.‭

God, in His desire to show mercy, allows the wicked to be prosperous within His creation. (33-41) Why? Because it is HIS goodness that draws each of us to Him. Evil is no match for God’s goodness. The chapter ends: “The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.” (42-43‬)

If we are wise, we will remember how faithful God’s love is to us, and thus, we will remain faithful to Him. If we begin to be dissatisfied, it’s because we have strayed from the one who always satisfies us. We need to go back and draw close to God because His steadfast love satisfies the deepest longing of our soul.
