Jesus made this remarkable statement to His disciples as He sent them out: “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16) His command challenged them to maintain a balance of wisdom and innocence in the face of evil.

How do we stay wise to evil, yet prevent it from jading our soul and freezing our heart?

If anyone was successful at striking this balance—it was Jesus. His life was the perfect manifestation of innocence and wisdom, and yet He withstood the most evil hand that man and satan could deal to Him. He loved wisely. He gives us the power to live in wise innocence amidst evil; otherwise, He would not have told us to do it.

Jesus lived with purpose—eternal purpose. Incredibly, He loved the people He would die for—and even—those who He knew would kill Him. He willingly died for you and me. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:21‬) When we are born again through His gift of grace, our spirit is made alive and we are given the ability to live with an eternal purpose, to transcend the temporal influences of evil. Thus, we can maintain an innocent spirit while also being wise to the ways of evil.

We can love the sinner and hate the sin.

To do this, we must immerse ourselves into God’s Word and make His ways ours—so that we grow closer to God. As we do this, He develops a purity of thought within us. Our mind and heart become simultaneously more wise AND more innocent. Conversely, if we allow the evil which surrounds us to dominate our mind, we will be neither wise nor innocent. It’s a choice—sometimes even one made minute by minute.

When we learn to live dominated by God’s Spirit—we find our eternal destiny. Jesus said: “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew‬ ‭10:39‬)

When we live close to Christ, both wisdom and innocence shine as a beacon of hope that are never dimmed by evil.
