“What do you give someone who gave His only Son?” These lyrics from one of my favorite Christmas songs by Darius Rucker, made me think about what gift I, as a mere human, could give to Almighty God.

What is our perfect gift to God, who believed in us so much that He gave His only Son for us?

This question was posed in the Old Testament book of Micah more than 500 years before the birth of Jesus:

“With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah‬ ‭6:6-8‬)

What does it mean to “do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God?” Jesus gave us very simple instructions:

“And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength…[and] love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark‬ ‭12:30-31‬)

The gifts that please God are not measured by the amount of material things we give; but rather, by the uninhibited giving of our heart to Him. When our heart belongs to Him—so does everything else. That’s love. When God is our first love, we hold the key to His heart and the gifts we give are the best we have.

When we give God our whole heart, we LIVE believing in Him the way He DIED believing in us.
