Our culture has elevated the pursuit of individual freedom—without any moral absolutes—to god-like proportions. It is promoted as the absolute good. However, if we define freedom as the right of the individual to determine his own set of values, this unqualified freedom—without the limitation of moral truth and obligation—simply doesn’t work because there will never be a consensus on who is qualified to decide the rules. However….

Is there anyone more qualified than God?

Jesus said, “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (‭‭John‬ ‭8:32‬)  Where do we find absolute truth? Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John‬ ‭14:6‬a) Do you know anyone else who has has existed since the history of time and who made everything…including you? The Bible says,  “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John‬ ‭1:1-4‬)

There is no one more qualified than God to set the standard for freedom!

If we want to be free, we must know God who is the author of freedom. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36) We may think that the Bible is a set of outdated rules, limiting our individual autonomy; however, Jesus summed up the law in one word: “Love.” He said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew‬ ‭22:37-39‬)

There is no greater law than love; and loving God with all our heart and loving others makes us free.

When we love, we are free.
