Our culture places great value on encouraging individuals to “find themselves,” but where do we look to discover this persona who, alone, holds our completely unique DNA fingerprint? Some say you must look within…but is this sufficient to uncover the depth and breadth of all you were created to be? Pure self-assessment is also self-limiting because we are incapable of being fully objective about ourselves. Others say look to our tribe to discover who we really are…but how are they in a better position to know our deepest intricacies and thoughts? Most of our journey is spent in the hills and valleys searching to know who we are so we can attain significance and meaning in this thing called life.

Search no more, because…

GOD knows you better than YOU know you.

How and why? Well, He created you. God told the Prophet Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭1:5‬) The Psalmist wrote: “My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalms‬ ‭139:15-16‬) If you designed something as intricate as a human, wouldn’t you be the best person to ask about how it works?

Knowing God reveals the real you to yourself, because when you are close to God, you see yourself through the eyes of your Creator. Is there anyone else (including yourself) who knew you before you were formed in the womb? When we study God’s Word, we get to know HIM and when we pray to Him, we strip away the pretenses and come before Him in the purest essence of who we are. As our most elemental self communes with our Creator, He reveals all the wildness and beauty He created within us. This awakening is one of the purest joys we experience in life! We rejoice in the self-discovery, for we find we are more “wonderfully made” than we ever imagined. (Psalms‬ ‭139:14‬)

When we discover who we really are, we praise God with all of our heart, soul and mind—because we know we are who we are—because of Him.
