God’s children live in a fallen world, but we don’t have to live like fallen creatures because when our spirit is born-again, our strongest desire is to live in purity, consistent with our new nature in Christ. He is sinless. When we know Him, the deepest part of us—our born again Spirit, or “inner man,” does NOT desire to return to the torture of a life dominated by sin. In other words, our spirit now has a major conflict with continuing to live in the practice of sin.

The Bible says: “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.” (1 John‬ ‭3:2-6‬)

When we are born again our inner man is like Christ; thus, our deepest desire is to live holy.

Our flesh, however, is never any better than the day we were saved. It fights to enslave us to sin. With remarkable transparency, Paul the Apostle described this struggle in his own life: “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.” (Romans‬ ‭7:18, 22-23‬)

Jesus conquered sin and thus, when we are born again, we possess the ability to win our personal war against sin. However, in order to keep from becoming defeated by the discouragement of our own failure, we must be aware the battle exists and be ready to fight.

When we seek to be purified by God, we become armed and dangerous against evil; it may knock us down, but it can’t knock us out.
