What our heart of heart really longs for is something this world cannot give us, yet—we constantly allow this world to capture our greatest efforts to meet our deepest desires.

In “Mere Christianity,” C. S. Lewis wrote: Most people, if they have really learned to look into their own hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world. There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you, but they never quite keep their promise. The longings which arise in us when we first fall in love, or first think of some foreign country, or first take up some subject that excites us, are longings which no marriage, no travel, no learning, can really satisfy.”

No experience or person in this world can satisfy us because the deepest part of us—the eternal part—was made for a supernatural world.

Our need for the supernatural—includes relationships. We were designed for a supernatural soul-mate. Yet, we often burden our earthly soul-mate with god-like expectations, when no human is equipped to be God. We demand more and more until we crush the life out of the relationship.

Only God can give your soul all it needs.

The Psalmist wrote: “Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” (Psalms‬ ‭107:8-9‬)‬‬
