Our Heavenly Father gives His children the Spirit of fearlessness. He said to Israel: “You shall not fear them [the enemies], for it is the Lord your God who fights for you.” (Deuteronomy 3:22‬) So, if God fights FOR us, how is it that fear can make inroads into our heart? What could possibly make us afraid—when the God who created everything—fights for us? The answer is simple: We’re only afraid—when we’re living in the enemy’s camp.

If we’re not on God’s side—we should be afraid!

When we choose any sin, to include—sneaky ones like doubt and fear—we’re living in the enemy camp. What are we doing there? Is there something better we hope to find in darkness that is better than the goodness God has given us in the light? The enemy is full of darkness and deceives us into thinking that bad is good and then, once we’re ensnared—we become afraid. Our instincts are spot on!

The fact is, none of us can hide from God—and we know it. So we also know it’s just a matter of time before our “secrets” will be revealed and everything will come crashing down around us. This causes us to live in fear, just like the religious leaders of Israel who were living in “secret” sin and thought they were getting away with it. God said of them: “ Am I a God near at hand, and not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places, So I shall not see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth?” (Jeremiah‬ ‭23:23-24‬)

God, who “fills heaven and earth,” is gracious, compassionate, and long-suffering towards us. He promises: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) If we want to be fearless, we must clean the closets of our own heart and remove any vestiges of the same wickedness we should be battling against! If we wish to invoke the power of Almighty God, we must cast aside our sin, humble ourselves and seek Him with all of our heart.
