During this world-wide pandemic, fear is gripping people and generating a sense of desperate self-preservation which is manifesting itself in insane behavior. For example, on my last trip to Walmart to buy butter, it looked like the zombie apocalypse had hit many of the aisles. Even in the worst of times, we as children of God do not have to live chained in desperation over the preservation of our physical life.

The Bible says: “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭1:7‬)

Are you living in “power, love, calmness, self-control, disciplined, and with a well-balanced mind? If God has given you the ability to live fearlessly and you are not—then ask yourself—why not?

Do you want to live in fear?

This pandemic is teaching me that the icy tentacles of fear will only pierce the parts of my heart in the areas I have NOT given to God. For example, if He is not Lord of my finances—then my finances are at the mercy of my circumstances—not in the care of Him. When living for His glory permeates every area of my life, then I KNOW this world is not my home. What I have here on earth—including my time, health, resources, and wealth—are just kingdom gifts. When they are in HIS care there is no need to worry.

If our deepest purpose is to preserve this earthly life for as long as we can—and gather as many trinkets as we can—we have definitely lost our way. As God’s children, our greatest purpose and most satisfying life—is to live for HIS GLORY. This life is short; eternity is forever. This pandemic has given us a golden opportunity to show the world the deep strength that comes from knowing our glorious Creator and loving Heavenly Father. When our life glorifies Him, others see He is real and satisfying.

God’s children have a transcendent reason for living which surpasses this frail, physical existence we seek so desperately to preserve.

Paul the Apostle wrote: “[Christ] has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” (‭‭II Timothy‬ ‭1:9-10‬)

Christ abolished spiritual death, and when we live with the deep knowledge of our eternal life; we have no fear of physical death, and—His light shines brightly within us and lights the darkness. The most abiding strength we possess—comes from God. When we daily seek to make Him Lord in every area of our life—we live courageously.
