When the Lord is our Shepherd, sometimes He has to make us lie down in green pastures. David, the Psalmist, whose first job was being the family shepherd, understood this about sheep, and so as one of God’s sheep, he wrote: “He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” (Psalms‬ ‭23:2-3‬) We are often so busy frantically living for the wrong things, that we need someone stronger than us to make us recognize what’s really important. We do this for our children; God also does it for us.

Right now, amidst this global pandemic, a lot of people are reconnecting with what’s really important. The “green pastures” are places of lasting joy and satisfaction—like time in God’s Word and deepening our faith in His promises, time with family, taking caring of others, enjoying a good home-cooked meal and investing time in people. These green pastures are what we need—when we’ve lost our way. So many of us have been living at a frenzied pace for so long that only something as huge as a pandemic could slow us down.

Like a good shepherd, God cares about us so much, that He often allows our circumstances to force us to “be still and know He is God.” (Psalms‬ ‭46:10-11‬) Why? Because sometimes it’s the only way we will pay attention to Him long enough to learn His ways are better than ours.

Job was a good man, with great wealth, many children, and great position. Although He lost everything, including his children, he experienced God in such a way that, after all of his horrible trials, his simple but profound observation about God was: “I know that YOU can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted…I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” (Job‬ 42:2,5-6‬) In the deeply traumatic valley of his life, he developed a relationship with God that forever changed him.

In this time when world-wide trouble is forcing us all to slow down, we can lie down in the ”green pastures,” and allow God to restore our peace to lead us in the path of righteousness for His glory.
