When we repeatedly have the wrong reactions to difficult or ugly situations, we need to remember that we respond based upon who we are, and this thought should give us pause to stop and wonder if we have lost our true identity, or perhaps—if we’ve never even found it. Are we repeatedly returning anger for anger, ugliness for ugliness, hate for hate, scorn for scorn, etc.? I get it—it’s often really hard NOT to respond this way—especially with someone who is our nemesis—BUT one of the the primary reasons we feel the NEED to retaliate is because we forget who we are.

We must remember who we are and how much we are loved.

When we are born into God’s family through the gift of salvation, the Bible says we are “God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved.” (Colossians‬ ‭3:12‬) Jesus gave everything He was and everything He had. Why? So we could be HOLY and LOVED.

We are made holy because Jesus “became sin for us.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) He chose to be ripped away from the truest love He’d ever known—so WE could know true love. When we dig deep into our relationship with God, so deep, so that when people treat us badly—we see them through our identity in God. Let’s put it this way. If a toddler in Walmart smacks me in the leg with all the force of his 2-foot 3-inch stature—will I retaliate by smacking him with all the force of an adult?

Why not?

I know who I am, I know my strength and I know the toddler is no match for me—right? If we REALLY know God, we also know His love, strength and wisdom. We know in the end—we win—because He won. We don’t need to engage in retaliation with the tedious toddlers in our life. Instead we can have compassion because we remember what it’s like to be small and selfish.

We are loved. We respond to others from the love we have received. We can respond to others with love because we are fully secure in our identity in Christ, and in Him, we love as we are loved.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“We love because he first loved us.” (‭1 John‬ ‭4:19‬)
