I remember several years ago, my mother telling me what a blessing it was to her that God had changed my heart. She prayed for me for many, many years as I wandered in the wilderness of sin. She knew SHE couldn’t MAKE me love God, but—that God’s Spirit could draw my soul. Like the prodigal son, I wasn’t willing to seek God’s goodness until I had been fed enough husks to be sick of the world and my own selfish ways. In the dirty hog-pen, alone and ashamed—I remembered God’s goodness and returned to my Heavenly Father. Why?

God changed my heart.

I love the illustration of a changed heart in the Book of Ezekiel when God told the fallen nation of Israel: “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.” (Ezekiel 36:26-27‬) When God changes our heart, He removes the “heart of stone” and replaces it with a heart that is alive in His Spirit.

When our heart (soul) is made alive by God, we are introduced to real love. God’s love. His love becomes the heartbeat of our existence. We desire to follow Him because we find extraordinary joy in His presence and the peace, wisdom, and power of His ways. We don’t want to return to desolation and spiritual poverty.

A changed heart opens the doors of Heaven to God’s extraordinary blessings.

After giving them a new heart, God proclaimed blessings on Israel. He said: “I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you. I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.” (Ezekiel 36:29-30,36) When God blesses us, it is evident from these verses, that He blesses every part of our life.

When our heart is changed by God, His blessings pour out of our life and are evident to everyone around us.

I’m so grateful my mamma never stopped praying for me.
