The hate erupting over the horrific and tragic death of George Floyd reveals a tiny fraction of the darkness boiling beneath the surface in so many people. As my daughter, Sara, sent me videos of the looting and destruction occurring in her neighborhood on Lake Street in Minneapolis, I was overwhelmed by a sense of helplessness. “Lord, how can a white woman, who has never been racially profiled—really make a difference in this tragedy?” I felt despair for my brothers and sisters burdened by fear—because of irrational hate based on the color of their skin.

What can one person do to help dispel the darkness of hate and injustice?

WE can be the light!

Christ said WE are to be the light: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew‬ ‭5:14-16‬) If JESUS called us to be light, He also gave us the POWER to be light—in the face of ANY darkness. How? Because HE is the light, and if He is in us—we can be too! Indeed, Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (‭‭John‬ ‭8:12‬)

If we are “following Christ,” we are NEVER powerless—no matter how great the darkness. Even a tiny pin light in a cave of inky darkness—will be seen by all in the cave. So when the darkness of hate seems to be overwhelming us, WE CAN DO SOMETHING POWERFUL! We can let the light of Christ shine more brightly through our life.

How do we do this?

Well, to “follow Christ” is to obey His laws, which Jesus summed up as: Love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself. When we live “following Christ,” then—amidst hate, we love. Thus, amidst fear, we can give hope. Love gives hope, and love always wins! How do we know this is true? Because God IS love and HE always wins!

God’s love casts out fear.

The Bible says: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” (1 John‬ 4:18‬) When we allow God’s presence to transform us, we become a powerful light of love that draws others to God’s love. Only HE has the power to conquer the darkness of hate. His love takes everything wrong about us and makes it right. God’s love is contagious. It is compelling. It draws people in to God’s presence. We CAN do something powerful—we can be more like Jesus, who was the most powerful light to ever walk in the darkness of this world.

God’s presence in our life is the light that drives out darkness.
