When I lack compassion for others, sometimes I need to be reminded about how compassionate God is to me. The people I know who are very compassionate, have a heightened awareness for people in distress and take measures to help alleviate or comfort them. I need to be more like them. I often run out of compassion way before I should if I don’t see that it is making a difference or producing results.

I wonder how much compassion God would show me if He used my standard to give HIS compassion—to me?

The Bible says: “Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He Himself knows our frame; He is mindful that we are but dust. As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer. But the lovingkindness of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep His covenant and remember His precepts to do them. The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all.”
‭(Psalms 103:13‬)

God gives us more compassion—comfort and help in our distress—than we can even comprehend. Yet, we STILL fall back into destructive habits and do little to help our situation. We consistently fail to draw close to Him. BUT—He knows our heart. He knows we fail. And for those who By all counts—He should give up on us. He doesn’t. Nor should we give up on each other.

Rather than thinking about compassion as a commodity to be managed by our bottom line, we need to allow GOD to be our guide in showing compassion. He sets the standard high—with HIS compassion to us. When He does, we are endowed with HIS compassion AND because HE has the knowledge of what is in each person’s heart—we can know when to give it without worrying about the results. When we “fear” Him, it means we respect and obey Him out of our absolute adoration for Him and thus, we allow Him to call the shots in our life in EVERYTHING—including the compassion we show to others.

When I allow God to control my life, I often find myself praying to Him as I talk with clients in my office. Why? I am praying for HIS measure of wisdom and compassion because I KNOW He will give it. I pray something like this: “Lord, show me what to say and do for this person, so they will be drawn to Your goodness.” He does. Time after time. Clients often ask me, “How did you know what I needed to hear?” Or, they say, “I feel peace and comfort when I come into your office—why?” It is always an opportunity to introduce them to my compassionate Heavenly Father!

Our perfect Father constantly showers us with compassion. Our compassion towards others should never be measured by our assessment of an expected result; rather, by the prompting of God– because He alone, knows the heart of man.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
