I was talking to a lady about how to hear the wisdom of God, but she was convinced that all the answers to life’s great problems lay within herself. She said, “I must center myself and look deep inside and there I will know myself and then everything else will make sense to me.” I asked her, “How does that work?” Her answer was a blank stare. I get it—it’s what she’s been told and she believed it without thinking through how it works. How can we search from within ourselves for what WE don’t know? But—like so many, she had no interest in learning there might be a way to find answers to the hard issues of life we all face each day.

It reminded me of the Proverb that says: “A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart.” (Proverbs‬ ‭18:2‬) This message seems kind of harsh—but I KNOW I need to hear it— and—hear it very often. I often fail to look to God’s Word for answers. I fail to take my questions to Him in prayer. Instead, I look to my own wisdom. Sometimes I am basically a practicing atheist—“Christian” in name only—because I exclude God from my daily dialogue. When problems arise, I fail to go to HIM first! Ugh!!

God promised: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

Imagine that—GOD—who knows everything—will share His knowledge with us. How futile to search within OURSELVES to discover what WE don’t know! The Psalmist wrote of his experience with God: “For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness. For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?” (Psalm‬ ‭18:28-31‬) When God is in our heart, we have access to His wisdom and strength.

The answers we seek do not lie within us—they lie within our relationship with God.
