I often pray with an expectation of what I think God’s answer should be instead of being completely open to God’s answer. In other words, I pray for what I want instead of praying for God’s will. This mindset is a hinderance to answered prayers, because—it’s not praying in the Spirit. Praying in the Spirit is what I must learn to do.

The Bible says: “The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:26-27‬)

We are so easily led astray by our emotional needs or overwhelmed by problems that we are often in such despair and have great difficulty praying in God’s will. I’ve been there many times. My prayer journal is proof. A daily entry may begin,“Lord I am so angry I can’t even pray—help me.” Or, “Lord, I’m too discouraged to know you are real today, please fill me with your Spirit.” It is then, that I must cling to the promises of God, or read His Word and ask for even just the words to pray.

I don’t want to waste my time praying wooden or canned prayers, but rather want to have the “effectual and fervent prayers” that the Bible says “avails much.” (James 5:16)

These effective prayers spring from a heart who is consistently seeking to be close to God and searching for Him. The Psalmist wrote: “For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me.” (Psalms 31:3‬) Our prayers must get beyond requests for our own comfort, and be directed to our magnificent opportunity give God glory. We were created for His glory, and when we allow the Holy Spirit to direct our prayer life, we experience prayers that moves mountains. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

When we pray in the Spirit, “The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (‭‭James‬ ‭5:16‬)
