In 1835, after making a nine month study of U.S. culture, religion and government, Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, “Nothing is more wonderful than the art of being free, but nothing is harder to learn than how to use than freedom.”  (Democracy in America.) Freedom is, indeed, difficult to learn to use because our tendency is to destroy ourselves with it. We will never live free as God intends if our freedom is used primarily for satisfying our fleshly desires.

God calls us to live in freedom—but what does that mean?

Paul they apostle wrote, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13‬) If our freedom is used to primarily satisfy the desires of our flesh, we will find our slaves to our desires. This is living in selfishness, rather than using our freedom to love. Selfishness will rob us of freedom—and it will be used to make others slaves of our desires as well.

Freedom is inextricably tied to love and sacrifice.

If we abandon the great responsibility to love, we will find ourselves in the chains of slavery. Paul said, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1‬) In LOVE—Christ subjected himself to live unselfishly and pay the ultimate sacrifice—so we could be free. The “yoke of slavery” is sin. Sin is the great enemy of our freedom. Would we use the great freedom Christ bought for us to indulge this old slave master? Shall we become so enslaved by our desires that we become like the drug addict wasting his life hooked on the destructive desire for another high?

No!

God has a magnificent plan for our life!!! When we seek Him, He fulfills our deepest desires. We seek the truth of His Word and the intimacy of a relationship with Him, we learn to live in the freedom He has given us.

God is the author of freedom and in His love, we learn the art of living in freedom.
