The flame of freedom will be extinguished if the beneficiaries of freedom forsake integrity. In his book, “If You Can Keep It: The Forgotten Promise Of American Liberty,” Eric Metaxes wrote of the crises of our national freedom. After the Constitution was ratified, Benjamin Franklin was asked by a lady whether the country was a republic or a monarchy, and he said: “A republic madam—if you can keep it.” Metaxes book explains how the founders acknowledged that an essential ingredient for a government run “by the people” was for people be individually and personally governed by integrity.

Our founders recognized that religious roots were fundamental to freedom’s foundation.

But it’s important to understand that governments which had forced religion on citizens—never touched their heart—nor the hearts of the leaders. Forced religion doesn’t produce integrity. Our system of checks and balances was carefully planned as a safety valve to prohibit the tyranny of leaders who depart from integrity.

When the people of a nation seek God, who is the Author of integrity and freedom, we instill a strong foundation into future generations.

The Bible connects God’s law with the security of our liberty. The Bible says: “So I will keep Your law continually, forever and ever. And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts.” (Psalms‬ ‭119:44-45)

The flame of freedom burns brightly when we learn to seek God and live in the integrity of His Presence.
