As I read of the extraordinary life of George Whitfield and the pivotal role he played in uniting the colonies by giving people a sense of personal identity with God, I couldn’t help but wonder if the current status of the citizenry of our country is much like it was in the 1740’s. The colonists had fled to the New World to escape oppressive state-led religion and find freedom. The Church of England was nothing more than an extension of the government, devoid of the idea that common man was on equal footing with the queen in the ability to possess a personal relationship with God. Religion was a liturgical and cold machination which instilled obedience through fear, and neither fired the soul or stirred the heart. Indeed, Whitfield began his quest for a relationship with God by practicing brutal deprivation upon himself and it wasn’t until he lay in the throes of terrible health and read of the salvation of the thief upon the cross that he realized that a relationship with God was personal and obtained it by grace through faith.

After he was born again, he began to EXPERIENCE God. As He began to seek to KNOW God, God gave him phenomenal opportunities to share his personal experience. Whitfield sparked The Great Awakening across the borders of several countries—including the colonies. When people SAW that God was REAL in his life and that he had been truly and deeply touched by God, they too, chose to be born again.

So–how is our country much like it was in 1739 when the twenty-four year old Whitfield stepped off a ship in Philadelphia?

We have entire generations who have NO IDEA Who God is because they’ve never SEEN Him in “Christians.” They believe God is merely an oppressive force–much like government–and that His existence is to restrict their freedom rather than give it. They have NEVER seen ANYONE profoundly touched by God who has been transformed from the inside out.

WE can change this!!! When we allow Christ to change us, then we have the ability to CHANGE the world by reconciling souls to Him. The Bible says: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”   And “God…reconciled us to himself..and gave US the ministry of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:17-18‬)

When God changes us, change is real and others see it and are changed.

One heart transformed by God—can awaken an entire nation. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
