The answer to the crises of violence, hate, and division in our nation is to develop good and strong habits of the heart. We cannot continue to ride the train of apathy because we fail to believe we can make a difference. The mood in our country could be stated as follows: “Everybody feels the evil, but no one has courage or energy enough to seek the cure” (Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America.) Do we want to make America great?

Where did the courage and energy which made America great—come from?

I think de Tocqueville’s observations were spot on. He wrote: “I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers – and it was not there . . . in her fertile fields and boundless forests and it was not there . . . in her rich mines and her vast world commerce–and it was not there . . . in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution–and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” (Democracy in America)

If modern democracy simply produces radical materialism and the selfish individualism—without a foundation of righteousness—we lose any interest in preserving the future. We will be living only for ourselves and will “meekly allow ourselves to be led in ignorance by a despotic force all the more powerful because it does not resemble one.” (Id.) In the name of individual freedom and personal autonomy—our country is birthing multiple generations who are addicted to selfish desires and are being led astray by a force they don’t even recognize as evil.

We can be light and illuminate the evil and the hidden chains of darkness.

WE can change OUR heart and develop what de Tocqueville termed “habits of the heart.” When we turn our heart to God, He promises: “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit…I will remove the heart of stone from you…I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes…you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God…I will deliver you.” (Ezekiel 36:26-29‬)‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

When we take ourselves off the throne of our heart and allow God to rule every aspect of our life—His Spirit reigns within us and—we are delivered from the bonds of selfishness. When God gives us His heart, we have the strength of a lion and the gentleness of a lamb. God’s heart living within our heart—can change a nation.
