The good things in this world satisfy us only when obtained with the blessing of the Creator of Blessings. When we obtain the good things in life—within God’s plan—our desires satisfy us. Without God, they never do. The Bible says: “You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.” (Psalms 145:16-19‬) To fear God isn’t to obey because we’re afraid of Him—rather, it is to obey because we desire to have a strong sense of His presence—and we don’t want our disobedience to cause us to lose it.

Thus, when we try to satisfy our natural needs or desires by disobedience like lying, cheating, stealing, or otherwise breaking God’s rules—the “good” things we obtain NEVER satisfy us. We always need more. Why? Because unless God is the center of all our desires, we filling the space in our heart with things that are not designed to be there. It’s like trying to breathe dirt instead of oxygen, or eating sawdust instead of food. We will choke to death and die of starvation.

So when I have a desire that surfaces—like the desire for a godly man to serve God with—I don’t need to go out and start hunting Kim’s way. Rather, in peace, I daily entrust this desire to my Heavenly Father. When I express my childlike longings to Him, my Father’s arms surround my heart. He purifies my deepest longings in the blessings and sweetness of His presence. His goodness is imprinted on my soul and, even in the absence of that godly man I desire, I am comforted in following the path of peace He has planned for me today.

It is sweetly overwhelming to know that our Heavenly Father knows our needs better than we do. No matter how many good things we attain—without God’s presence—we really have much of nothing. Draw close to God—He is here. He always has been.

Our Heavenly Father “satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” (Psalms 107:9‬)‬‬
