Every Christian should have to explain to a child how to “hear” God speak. Of course, you’re not going to fool a child too easily, so in order to answer with any degree of credibility, it means you must have actually heard Him. I remember finding myself being cross-examined about this subject by a young girl, who along with her family, had been my house guests for several days. In passing conversations she heard me mention how God had “spoken to my heart.”

She said wanted to know how to hear God, too!

Wow—what a teaching opportunity! My personal experience with God made it much less intimidating. But, before I opened my mouth, I began to pray in my heart for the answer: “Oh God, how do I explain to this precious child how I hear the voice of Your Spirit move my heart?”

God showed me that the answer was found in what I was doing at that very minute!

When God’s voice is “heard?” When we long to hear Him so much that we draw close to Him in every aspect of our life. We don’t allow ANYTHING to come between us and Him and thus, we’re not thwarting the lines of communication. In fact, we’re staying close enough to Him, so we may hear even the faintest whisper of His Spirit. God speaks to us through His Word, Creation,  and other people.

The more we draw close to Him through obedience, the more we sense His direction. He gives Us thoughts about what to do and say and the wisdom about how to do it. The more I experience His presence, the louder I hear His “voice”  guide me.

How does this work?

When we really know someone—for example, our mother—we can often “hear” her “speak” to us without her saying a word—right? The first step to knowing God is to become His child through accepting His gift of salvation. Then—knowing God is directly dependent upon the degree to which we study, obey, conform and listen. Through His Word, God has given us a vast education of Himself so we may learn who He is. In Creation, He has given us the visual of His majesty, genius and love.

Jesus said, “Everyone then who HEARS these words of mine and DOES them will be like a WISE man…” (Matthew 7:24‬) Wisdom is from God. God promises: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” (Jeremiah 33:3‬)

God is always speaking—to hear Him—we simply need to learn His language and listen.‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
