We live in a sound bite culture and—it’s eating us alive. We’ve convinced ourselves we must learn important things in sound bites. We don’t believe we have the attention span to go deep into the things that matter—like time with God—and as a result, our soul-man is starving. Remember, the lies we tell ourselves are often the most dangerous ones.
The truth is, we ALL have the ability to pay attention to something for extended periods of time. Think about when you watched the last hour-long show, football game, or had an all-out Netflix binge. Did you have any trouble being captivated for hours? Did you watch so intensely that you couldn’t even leave the couch to pee? Yeah, right—we’ve all done it.
So—when we say our attention span only allows us to learn God’s Word in “sound bites” we’re just being dishonest.
Why is it that we are NOT captivated by God’s Word and His presence like we are our favorite Netflix series or football game?
Perhaps it’s because we’ve never experienced His presence. If God’s presence was the most satisfying and precious part of our existence, then we’d be so captivated that we could spend hours on end with Him. We’d make the time. We’d do it often.
I have to admit—most of my Christian life was not spent having a wonderfully compelling and addicting experience with God. That’s because I never took the time to know Him. Thus, the thought of studying His Word, sitting quietly in His presence, listening for His direction—just seemed like a chore. That’s because world and the devil have done a fantastic job of making God unattractive and—our lack of desire for His presence is evidence! The forces of evil do NOT want us to study God’s Word, meditate on His greatness, sit in silence and allow Him to speak to us.
Because when we absorb God’s Word and His presence, and are able to hear His Spirit moving through us—we are filled with the immense power, wisdom, and love. The experience of His presence is of such immense value that the enemy wants us to remain ignorant of it! But let me tell you this—once you get a taste of God’s presence—you’ll never want anything else—as much as you want Him.
Once you’ve experienced His presence, then like the Psalmist, your heart will sing: “O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.” (Psalms 63:1-8)
