The best motivation for giving to people in need is not—guilt or obligation, rather—generosity borne of love. Jesus said: “Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:12‬)

How does the Golden Rule affect the way we give?

If we take the Golden Rule as literal truth, the fact is—it will absolutely revolutionize the way we give!

Think about the way you give now. Do you give to the needy—the things you would want given to you—if you were needy? OUCH! You see, we tend to give the poor—what we don’t need, what we have left over, what we’re getting rid of and can’t sell. We figure that’s good enough for “them.” We’re more generous with those we actually love, respect, or like—but not so much to someone we don’t even know.

Am I right?

Jesus said: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me…Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” (Matthew‬ ‭25:35-36, 40‬) Jesus gave us this remarkable illustration to help us understand WHO are the most important people we should give to.

And furthermore…

…when we comprehend even an inkling of the poverty stricken beggars we were when Jesus rescued us from the streets of sin, we develop a burning desire to be generous to others the way He is to us. We know that our generosity towards those who cannot give us anything in return is a reflection of the generosity of God towards us. God doesn’t want us to give out of guilt or obligation; rather, out of the love that we have for He, who has given us so much!

God gave Hs best for us—who transgressed His love; and because of Him, we DESIRE to give our best—for those who need it most.
