Do you ever wonder why sometimes you feel so far from God? We were created with a need for God, and when we don’t have a relationship with Him, it creates anxiety. Like drinking salt water when you’re dying of thirst, nothing—except God’s presence—will quench our anxiety.

There are basically two reasons you feel far from God: Either you’ve never been born again; or, you haven’t allowed God to make His home in your heart.

When we receive Christ as our Savior, He makes our spirit-man alive. We have new genetics—and they are Christ’s! We have the ability to communicate with God, who is a Spirit. We have a familial connection that allows us to come into His presence. We didn’t have that privilege when our Spirit was dead.

But…even after we’re born into the family of God, we can feel like we are far from God.

Jesus explained it when He said: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John‬ ‭14:23‬) You KNOW when someone is living in your home—especially when it’s GOD! So if you are born again, and you don’t feel close to God, it’s because you’re not loving Him.

What does it mean to love God?

Jesus made it simple. He said: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word.” We obey God’s Word—not out of obligation or fear—but because of His great love to us. Like our parents loved us a newborn, He loved us before we were capable of loving Him. But babies are supposed to grow and learn how to live healthy and joyful lives. That’s what the wisdom of God’s Word does—it builds a healthy relationship with Him.

Obedience to God’s Word is an act of love which builds a relationship and a home in our heart for God.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.” (Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-8‬)
