For the longest time, I didn’t realize that prayer was much more than just expressing myself—rather, it’s very much about—learning to answer God. Perhaps it’s even more important to answer God than it is to express myself to Him.

Well, when a baby is born, and all he ever learns is how to express himself in his own language—cry, screech, gurgle, coo—but never learns how to have an articulate and complex response to adult conversation—how will he ever maximize his talent? He has to learn to listen in order to really learn to speak.

Like babies, when we are born again, we do a lot of babbling to God in baby talk. We tell Him about what we want (baby food) and the problems which soil or simple existence (dirty diapers.) But to grow in our ability to experience a meaningful life, we must learn to listen to Him.

The most obvious and simple way to hear God speak directly to us is through His written Word.

When we read God’s Word with an open heart to be taught, we are “listening” to His Word. When we read with an open heart to know God and please Him—we desire to conform to what we read. As we conform to His Word, we have a stronger sense of His Spirit and then we begin to be led on His path of peace, wisdom, love and strength. We pray God’s Words back to Him just as a child who is maturing speaks in his father in the language he was taught.

Then, an amazing phenomenon occurs—we grow in our ability to communicate because His Spirit intercedes for us and teaches us to pray! The Bible says: “The Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans‬ ‭8:26-27‬)

What a loving God we have, who not only give us words to speak to Him, but to also sends His Spirit to teach us how to pray in His will!

This kind of prayer makes for uncommon conversation—because it is a gift of Heaven. When we learn to pray God’s Word back to Him and have the Spirit engaging us with the throne of Heaven, we are engaging in communication with Him on a level that only people who know each other really well are capable of doing. And—we—get to experience this with God Almighty!
