If we search for love from anyone except God, we will never find the REAL love God intends for us. Nowhere in God’s Word does He EVER say for us to SEEK TO BE LOVED—by other people; yet the culture of this world bombards us with this gospel—that we should strive to make ourselves desirable so we can capture the ultimate lover. And sadly– most of us live like we BELIEVE this false teaching. We believe that–the better looking we are, the more intelligent we are, the richer we are, the more athletic we are, the more successful we are—then–the MORE we will be loved!

We fail to understand the basic nature of REAL love.

According to the Bible, true “love”– “seeks not her own.” (1 Corinthians 13:5) If someone “loves” us because we are beautiful, then the “love” will end when the beauty fades. It’s doubtful they ever really loved us in the first place or were just using us for their own pleasure. If someone “loves” us because we are rich, they are “loving” us based upon a desire for riches which—produces perpetual dissatisfaction—not love. The same can be said for ANY external characteristic which attracts a “lover.”

This kind of “love” is not about love at all—it’s about selfishness—which is the opposite of love.

Real love is unselfishness and Christ was the ultimate example. His life is the “Exhibit A” of love. His Word defined “love” simply for us. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (1 John 3:16)

If you want to RECEIVE real love—fall in love with God—and experience His REAL love—through GIVING love to others.
