One of the pivotal lessons God is teaching me from the current political craziness is the critical importance of learning to LISTEN to God when I pray.  The prophet Habakkuk prayed:

O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted. (Habakkuk‬ ‭1:2-4‬)

What an appropriate prayer for today! And maybe you’ve also been making this complaint to God for our country. I certainly have! But as I read further, it made me realize that I was doing a lot of prayerful complaining to God AND—not a lot of listening. Hmmmmm…..

After Habakkuk prayed, he wrote: “I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and LOOK OUT to see what HE will say to me.”(Habakkuk‬ ‭2:1‬a) ‭Amazing response—right? Am I on the LOOKOUT for God’s answer about what I can do? You see it’s one thing to complain to someone who can help; but it’s quite another thing to LISTEN with a wide open, HUMBLE heart which is willing to RESPOND to instructions. We often want to complain—but not listen—to GOD’S solution.

We are too overwhelmed with the enormity of the problem and not close enough to God to trust Him.

I am the worst about this. I’ll pray—and then distract myself with a show, hide my head in the sand, worry, try to fix things my own way, complain—or, do nothing at all. Mercifully, God is teaching me how to listen for REAL solutions. He gives me direction for today. I likely would be overwhelmed if He gave me much direction beyond today. But today is  all I need to know about. He’s already told me the end-game and—we win!

If  “we the people” stand together, united in God’s love, there is no stronger force for change! He will teach us to how love like He does and live for something bigger than ourselves like those who fought and died for liberty–sacrificed their lives, spilled their tears and shed their blood–to give birth to our nation. Our most important sacrifice is to give our heart to God so we can be guided by His love and wisdom—for His glory. Even amidst the rampant evil, God has a plan for our future.

Today, set yourself in a watchtower to listen to God and—trust Him to take care of tomorrow.
