Who among us does not long to have that one special friend? Our culture is plagued by loneliness on an epic scale due to rampant divorce, geographical separation of families, frenzied preoccupation with materialism, internet socialization instead of personal contact, and a steady stream of 24/7 entertainment without ever having to leave our home. All these factors have all isolated us.

But God created us for relationships.

C.S. Lewis wrote, “We are born helpless. As soon as we are fully conscious we discover loneliness. We need others physically, emotionally, intellectually; we need them if we are to know anything, even ourselves.” Because GOD created us, our most meaningful relationship is with HIM. He gives us the most acute and accurate sense of who we are.

Our greatest friendships are with people whose greatest friend is God; because in Him is the greatest love which is the basis for the greatest friendship.

Loneliness isn’t cured by in friendship with someone who has something physical to offer us or in places where people are just looking for a good time. If we think our best friends are the ones who have money, nice things, or a prestigious career would we still enjoy their friendship if they didn’t have those things? Exactly.

Friendship with God is different—no person or circumstance changes it; and when He is our best Friend, we are a friend worth having.

When God is our center, we know who we are irrespective of what we have or who our friends are. God’s friendship wards off loneliness because we are constantly engaging with people as Jesus did. In His life and His death, Jesus practiced what He preached about friendship: “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John‬ ‭15:13‬) He showed us how to be a friend and He told us how to have His friendship. “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” (John‬ ‭15:14‬) Passionately pursuing God is the permanent cure for loneliness because in Him we find our best Friend AND we become a best friend!
