Is a bad attitude worth the sacrifice? I saw this quote posted on Facebook: “Don’t confuse my personality with my attitude. My personality is who I am. My attitude depends upon who you are.” When I read it, it was a wake-up call for me! I had lived like this–trapped into believing others could ruin my day and make me have a bad attitude.

The truth is–my attitude does NOT depend on someone else!

There’s no doubt, that when I’m around some people, the struggle is real. I can get an icy edge, become belligerent, testy, sad, sour, critical, nasty, etc. Is there anyone who provokes negative attitudes in you? It’s so easy to develop the same ugly attitude as someone who’s chosen to live ugly. However, that’s OUR choice–and by doing so–we LOSE a strong sense of God’s presence.

The Bible says: “Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. For ‘Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.’” (1 Peter 3:9-12) If we CHOOSE to have a stinky attitude in reaction to someone—we are setting ourselves against God.

When we choose a bad attitude, we’re only hurting ourselves.

However, when we stay close to God, it’s amazing to see the responses He comes up with in the face of ugliness. If you know ahead of time that you’ll be around a difficult person, ask God to prepare your heart. He is faithful. When we know the joy of God’s presence, any small satisfaction we gain from a bad attitude isn’t worth the sacrifice of His love, wisdom, strength and peace.
