When we spend quality time with God, He challenges us to step-up our game by eliminating the things that sideline us. An athlete can eat right, practice, and study his sport–but to go to the next level he must also discipline himself to get rid of bad habits and work harder in areas where he is weak. Similarly, our failure to undo spiritual bad habits and address our sinful weaknesses prevents us from maximizing our talent.

How badly do you want to play in the big league?

The first step is to identify what is crippling our talent. GOD gave us the talents we possess, and to maximize it, we must be empowered by HIM. What cuts off our holy and Almighty power-source? Unholiness—which is sin. It may be wrong things we’re doing, or failing to do right things—either way—it hurts us.

Sin is a crippling, game-changer.

It’s time to stop making excuses for ourselves and honestly evaluate what’s holding us back. Since it’s hard to be objective about ourselves, an honest friend may need to step in to evaluate us. Once we’ve identified the problem areas, we need to stop making excuses and commit to change.

Don’t you want to be the best you can be?

The more we eliminate sin and draw close to God, the more He empowers us, and the brighter His gifts shine within us. The Bible says: “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” (2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:6-7‬)

Take the challenge to let God’s light shine from you. God is light. (1 John‬ ‭1:5b) You’ll never walk in darkness and expect to reflect light! Our talent alone isn’t enough to get us into the spiritual big leagues.

To step-up our spiritual game, we must capitalize on our biggest asset–God’s power!
