I was having lunch with a friend and she asked me, “What does it mean it mean to experience God’s presence?” That’s a great question, and I can tell you that for the first 20 years of my Christian life—I would NOT have had a very good answer.

Why not?

Because you can’t very well explain something you’ve hardly ever experienced.

If I accepted an invitation work in the White House and only met the President one time, could I ever say I really KNEW the President? I’d be lying if I did. That’s what I did with God. I met Him when I accepted His gift of salvation and then never got to know Him. I was afraid that if I did—He would make me into an unpopular weirdo, or He would make me live a miserable life with no earthly pleasures. So, I pursued life without Him. Finally, when all the earthly pleasures and accomplishments were mine—guess what?

They NEVER satisfied me.

So, I turned back to God. His Word promises: “You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭16:11‬) How do we find these forever pleasures of HIS presence?

When our spirit is born again by accepting His gift of salvation, we are just babies. We must grow and learn God’s language so we can communicate with Him. This is more than just an intellectual pursuit of Biblical knowledge. Learning His Word teaches us who He is and how to get close to Him. However, if we never put into practice what we learn about knowing Him–we will never experience His presence, AND we make our life more difficult than necessary.

The Bible explains: “I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope.”
‭‭(Psalms‬ ‭16:8-9‬) Conversely, when we put anything else above God, the Bible says “their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭16:4a) Pursuing the gods of money, athletics, sex, beauty, power, etc., will only bring us sorrow.‬‬ God has a much better plan for us!

When we experience God’s presence, we find supernatural—joy, peace, strength, wisdom and love. This begins when we put seeking Him above seeking any other thing or person. The more we experience God, the less we ever want to leave His side. When we pursue knowing Him as we would the greatest love of our life, we fall into a love relationship that is like none other!

In God, we experience the fullness and satisfaction of a relationship that is far, far, beyond any love we ever imagined possible.
