When I ran track in college, my coach planned my training so I could increase my speed and endurance—far beyond my comfort zone. He knew I could run faster and he wanted me to experience my greatest speed.

But the training was crazy!

For example, he made us run the bleachers all the way up to the top set, which was what was known at the University of Arkansas as “Hog Heaven.” By the second of four sets, my lungs were on fire, my heart was bursting out of my chest, and my hamstrings were like loose rubber bands involuntarily popping my knees up past my hips. I always felt like there was no way I’d finish two more sets!

But–coach knew I could.

My coach had been a world class runner and—he had trained world class runners. I could trust him to bring out the best in me. Although I never became a world class runner, I accomplished a speed and strength far beyond what I ever possessed—before he coached me. I submitted myself to him and he pushed me to accomplish what I didn’t know I could do.

This is what God will also do for us as well—if we submit to Him.

God knows our limitations and HE knows our potential; and to reach our potential we need to KNOW Him and submit to His coaching. Then….when the trouble of life sucks the wind out of our lungs and we don’t think we can run another step–all of our training—causes us to remember His promises in His Word. We remind ourselves of promises like this one:

“Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.” (Habakkuk‬ ‭3:17-19‬)

Jesus walked this earth and experienced our pain and He did it like no one born before, or after Him. He is worth listening to. He is worth emulating. He was beyond “world class” in the way He ran the race, and—He IS—THE Almighty Coach. HE knows our limits because–He created us.

Allowing God to be our coach maximizes the talent He created within us.

We can trust that the races we run with Him are never beyond HIS strength and wisdom. When we see the results of God working through us, then failures and life’s obstacles serve only to strengthen our resolve to train harder with Him!

God ALWAYS wins!
