What is the basis for creating our life’s greatest legacy? In Steven Cubby’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” he suggests writing a personal mission statement based upon the eulogy others would write about us at our funeral.

What do we hope that people closest to us–family members, best friends, professional associates, and community members–will say about us?

Interesting.

Will my children say: “She was a loving mom?” Will colleagues say: “She was a real killer in the courtroom? Will close friends say: “She was loyal?” While all these things are admirable, is this REALLY enough to sum up the purpose of my entire life? It’s not that there’s anything wrong with being remembered for positive attributes; but without Christ’s eternal purpose, my life is simply a flower that quickly fades. Two hundred years from now, the ones who remember me will also be dead and no one will remember anything about me.

Or, not?

The good news is—we CAN leave a REAL and ETERNAL LEGACY—in fact—God created us to do just that!!!

The Bible says:

“I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” (Isaiah‬ ‭43:6-7‬)

Jesus said He glorified the Father while He was on earth. (John 14:13, 17:4) As John stood before the throne of God he saw the 24 heavenly elders worship God, saying, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” (Revelation 4:11)

All creatures great and small were created to worship the Creator of all Heaven and earth. Humans were created in His image and for His glory! When our life reflects the glory of God, our legacy is defined by HIM. His glory permeates every aspect of our life. Our legacy becomes everlasting because it is inextricably intertwined with our everlasting Father.

When we realize that God is the Creator of all the beauty, intelligence, power, and magnificence that we admire, we live in reality and—our small life creates an eternal legacy. People will remember us for more than a while, because God, through our life, will work eternal change and they, too, will carry the seeds of the glorious Gospel which will be multiplied for generations to come, and on into eternity.

What a priceless privilege to create an eternal legacy!
