Who will help you when you need it most? During my time of greatest need, I tend to call my best friends or family, or—I simply depend on myself. We often like to tell ourselves that we depend on God, but isn’t THIS how we REALLY live? A problem comes along and we seek a solution from everyone except God. Yep—that’s me!

The Psalmist wrote:

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” (‭‭Psalms‬ ‭121:1-8‬)

The living, never-sleeping God, who made heaven and earth is our most dependable, strongest, and wisest source of help.

So why then, in ALL times of need, do we NOT call HIM first?

It’s because we’ve allowed ourselves to adjudge Him incompetent, weak, uncaring, and ignorant. If we thought of Him more highly than our friends, family, and yes, even our own self, we would call on Him first—in every situation. In our mind we may acknowledge the fact that God can help, but our heart has likely not learned to trust Him. We’re on a collapsing bridge about to plunge into a raging river and we won’t grab the hand of the only person qualified to rescue us.

The thought that God is ABLE and WILLING to help me in ALL trouble makes me want to know God—not just in my head, but in the deepest parts of my soul.

God IS love, and it is in Him I desire to entrust the journey of my soul!
