Are you confident enough to be you, or are you always trying to be just a poor imitation of someone else? We’re not nearly as good at being someone we’re not—as we are being who God made us to be. God uniquely and wonderfully designed each of us and we are different for a very important reason.

The Bible says: “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalms‬ ‭139:13-14)‬ Among the 8 billion people on earth—God made only one YOU. That’s pretty wowza special.

So how do we learn to be confident in who we are?

First, we must stop comparing ourselves to others, competing with each other, conforming to peer pressure, and contorting our life to gain approval of others. Jesus set us to free—to be exactly who He made us—for His glory. It should be a colossal relief to know that we don’t have to be like someone else!

Second, we must seek to have an intimate relationship with God. It is God, alone, who knows exactly who we are; thus, we need to know HIM if we want to know US. We need to stop listening to all the other voices around us who tell us WHO and WHAT to be. These voices peddle a false gospel which proclaims joy is found apart from God.

The Psalms says: “Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.” (Psalms 119:73) We were born to know God. His commands were all summed up by Jesus as this: Love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind and love our neighbor as ourselves.

When you love God MOST, you learn to love yourself as He does; He is always confident.

ALL other gods abuse us, use us, and wear us out. Just think about the unhealthy addictions you’ve had and you will KNOW this is true. I mean, how hard did you slave to get that perfect body to attract the love of that man who dumped you? Exactly. God is a good Master and He wants to reveal EXACTLY who you are to you so you can become confident enough in Him to live free from the crushing disappointment of the lesser gods.

Don’t ignore the uniqueness God created within you—embrace Him and you will embrace yourself. Then you will become confident in who God made you because you will be confident in God.

When we get to know God, we find He adores us just the way He created us. The confidence we gain in being loved by Him is amazing—even more than, for example being adored by someone famous. The Bible says: “But if one loves God truly [with affectionate reverence, prompt obedience, and grateful recognition of His blessing], he is known by God [recognized as worthy of His intimacy and love, and he is owned by Him].” (1 Corinthians 8:3)

An intimate relationship with God gives us the confidence to succeed as the unique and wonderful person He created!
