For most of my Christian life I had a sadly warped view of God and it kept me from experiencing His love in a deeply personal way. It is taking years of experiencing His presence to change this; but I can say without a doubt, that God’s love defies description!

Why was I was afraid of Him?

Why did I run?

Many reasons. I was fearful that His plans for me were less interesting, fun, extraordinary, good, etc., than the plans I had for myself. Further, I adjudged Him incompetent to guide me, and incapable of knowing the things that would give me joy. Wow—-really??? Yep. I didn’t understand who He IS and—that He loves me more completely than anyone has ever loved me.

God’s love is the love I spent my entire life desperately searching for and yet—ran from the hardest!

You see, I thought I had to make myself extraordinary in order to be absolutely adored and loved. But God’s love doesn’t work that way. Soren Kierkegaard made this interesting assessment of love:

“Is it an excellence in your love that it can love only the extraordinary, the rare? If it were love’s merit to love the extraordinary, then God would be—if I dare say so—perplexed, for to Him the extraordinary does not exist at all. The merit of being able to love only the extraordinary is therefore more like an accusation, not against the extraordinary nor against love, but against the love which can love only the extraordinary. Perfection in the object is not perfection in the love.” (Kierkegaard, Soren Works of Love)

God loves us because HE is extraordinary and knowing Him—allows us to experience HIS extraordinary love. He made each of us extraordinary and loves us just as He made us. It is WE who struggle to believe in HIS love. When we begin to seek Him and strive to live in His presence then—we KNOW His love.

“So we have come to KNOW and to BELIEVE the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John‬ ‭4:16‬)

Until we seek God with no reservations, we will never experience God’s presence and His extraordinary love. What is holding us back?

Often, it is our darkened and dim view of God, and/or, our extraordinary addiction to sinful, love-destroying habits. We must love God more than we love our sin. He doesn’t force His love upon us. It is the call of love’s goodness–rather than the threat of hell–which draws us to Him. When we come to “know and believe the love that God has for us,” we begin to understand that WE are the objective of His unwavering love and—WOW! (1 John 4:17)

It is the experience of God’s love that completely transforms our heart AND our view of Him! He is love.
