When people hurt us we must train ourselves to quickly forgive them so our joy is not poisoned by bitterness. We often plant seeds of hurt deep in our heart as a way of protecting ourselves from being hurt again. Unfortunately, all this does is grow weeds of bitterness. The thick weeds of bitterness do not protect our heart. They multiply and—destroy it.

God is the protector of our heart.

When we forgive others the way God forgives us, we draw close to Him and allow Him to protect our heart. How thoroughly does God forgive us?

“As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” (Psalms‬ ‭103:12)

But some arrows are so deep that we cannot see how we will ever be able to forgive.

When we feel so deeply hurt and unable to forgive, we must go to God in our weakness. He will teach us to forgive thoroughly and completely. He has forgiven more crimes against His love than anyone in the entire world has. He understands our struggle. He was in it—when we all sinned against Him.

God has GIVEN extraordinary amounts of forgiveness and He can teach us how to GIVE it too.

When we recognize the great degree of forgiveness we’ve been given, the crimes against our love seem miniscule in the light of His glorious grace to us. Has anyone EVER transgressed against our love to the degree we’ve violated God’s love? When the reality of this perspective humbles us, then forgiveness towards our offender blossoms in our heart. We don’t need their apology in order to forgive. God’s presence is reason enough to forgive.

We long to have God constantly hold us close in His circle of grace.

And…grace roots out bitterness.

“Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.” (Hebrews 12:14-15)

When we learn to give grace to others as God gives it to us, our joy is no longer defiled by bitterness.
