In his book, “Desire,” John Etheridge wrote that we all have basically three choices about how to live—that is, to be alive and thirsty; to be dead; or, just to be addicted. Think about yourself and the level of satisfaction with life right now. Is your spirit alive in Christ and thirsting for more of Him? Or, are you spiritually dead and your soul drowning in apathy from constant disappointment? Or, is your spirit alive but addicted to things that are destroying your best relationships—especially with God?

Wow—I think most of my life was lived in this third category!

But I’m so grateful, that God, in His mercy and love—is constantly wooing me back to Himself.

When I am close to God, He adds such great richness to my life that I don’t want anything or anyone to come between us. He satisfies me AND keeps me thirsty for more of HIM. All the goodness He created for me to enjoy becomes subjugated to my desire for Him. THIS, is how I want to live each day!!! Because…

…in God’s transforming presence, every part of my life is enhanced.

When we are close to God, we WANT to do what is right and good because His presence develops within us an appetite for His goodness. Jesus said:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (‭Matthew‬ ‭5:6‬)

Knowing God re-trains our senses so we hunger after what is right. Our spirit recognizes the beautiful fragrance of His righteousness and—the stink of addicting sin loses its appeal. We KNOW it will destroy the best things in our life. We recognize that the experiences we enjoy like beautiful music, art, hiking in the woods, sexual intimacy, sports, our favorite food, etc., are enjoyments that God created for us to enjoy—WITH Him—and in HIS way!

We can NEVER truly enjoy God’s gifts—without His presence.

If you are struggling with emptiness or loneliness; if your possessions are not making you happy; or, if people have failed you—then maybe you’re ready to find your greatest desires satisfied by God. To be close to Him, you must be born again by accepting His gift of salvation. Then, you must forsake sin and passionately seek to know Him. He poured out everything He had, right down to His last drop of blood, so that you could have a relationship with Him.

Don’t ever be afraid of seeking God—He is the greatest lover of your soul.
