No one will ever love us like God. So, why would we ever continue to love anything or anyone more than Him? For example, if I say I love God, but do what I want as long as I can get away with it—I don’t REALLY love God. If my goals and the pursuit of MY own physical satisfaction are more important than God—then I am my god. We can’t view obedience to God as something to keep us out of hot water because that’s not obedience based on a deep love for God.

When our eyes are opened and we see that God, who died for us, is truly good—we desire to obey Him—out of love

Don’t we all desire to be closer to what is good? Is there is no one as good as God? Obedience brings us closer. The first great command Jesus gave was,

“Love the Lord thy God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30a)

He gave us this command for our benefit. We tell our children to do things for their benefit. God wants us to love Him above all else because then—we benefit from a relationship with Him which directs us to His path of goodness. By loving Him, we place ourselves squarely in the middle of the wondrous things which He has prepared for us.

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Today, you face many choices. Will you choose the good things God has prepared for you; or the same old path of trying to satisfy yourself with worldly things? Is choosing your own way worth the risk of losing the goodness God has stored for your today? Loving obedience brings us into a path of goodness that we could never experience without the presence of God.

God’s presence makes each day a gift.
