God doesn’t give us everything we want, because sometimes it will take us away from what we need. If you take stock of your life—what is it you think you need most? Is it more money or a better job? How about a soul-mate? We think, “if I just had ______ I would be so happy!” But when we attain the thing or person we wanted, the satisfaction wears off pretty quickly. Why do we live in such a vicious cycle of desire where you are never satisfied??? It is because…

…we were designed with a need for God.

Jesus said to the woman at the well,

“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (‭‭John‬ ‭4:13-14)

The woman at the well had tried to find her satisfaction in sexual pleasure and marital security (five husbands). When Jesus offered her complete satisfaction, she was ready!

Jesus is the living water, and when we have been satisfied by Him, nothing else will ever be good enough. Furthermore, when we are satisfied by Him, the wrong desires which burn so hotly inside of us are cooled by His presence. We’ve had the best and never want to settle for less than Him.

When we’re close to God, we’re on the winning side of our battle with our own desires.

God knows our every weakness and He knows which desires will take us from Him. If money makes us independent of Him, it’s best we not have it. If a career advancement distracts us from His will, it’s a setback. If a relationship takes us from Him—we should let it go. Anything that comes between us and God is a step in the wrong direction. The means never justify the end when it’s outside God’s will.

God has a brilliant plan to satisfy us—trust Him in all things:

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew‬ ‭6:25-26‬)

God waits to satisfy you.
