Have you ever been swept under by a rip tide? Once, when I was swimming not far from the shore, I got caught in a rip tide. It pulled me under and rolled me on the ocean floor. I was completely disoriented. Sand and seawater filled my nose and mouth. All I could think about was breathing. When I finally surfaced, I gasped and choked as my lungs filled with oxygen. I’d been swept so far out that the shore looked miles away. But, I could see my destination and I had oxygen in my lungs—it was all I needed. I began to swim.
As I recalled this scary incident during my quiet time—it reminded me of my desperate need for God.
For most of my Christian life I didn’t realize how much I needed Him because I was too independent to even recognize the desperate frailty of my own life.
Our life can change drastically or end suddenly—at any moment! We live in unpredictable and downright scary times. I have young friends who actually DID die from it. We live in a nation torn and divided by lies. We live in a world ravaged by natural disasters and the irrational hate of war—the most of which are religious wars!
We are ridiculously blind to believe we are strong or wise enough to live independently from God.
But we do it anyway.
We are much wiser if we choose to live as if we need Him as much as we need to breathe!
When you learn to live TOTALLY dependent upon God, you gain the perspective of the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Amidst the terror, you have clarity. When the rip-tides of life roll you underwater—God is your oxygen. He orients you to reality and tells you which direction to swim out of the rip. Amidst ALL difficult circumstances we have His Word which gives us 100% of all instructions for clarity in our life. God always gives crystal clear direction because even though He is fighting the ground battle with us in the trenches, He’s also riding above the battle and in the future. With Him—we are on the winning side! So…
When we recognize that God is our spiritual oxygen—our soul and spirit constantly seek Him because we KNOW we need Him—just like we KNOW we need to breathe!
“With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early.” (Isaiah 26:9a)
Do you yearn after God? If you do not LONG for Him—then you are breathing salt water and living disoriented and dominated by your enemies—the flesh, the devil, and the world. God offered you something so much better; that is in Christ we may…
“live, and move, and have our being.” (Acts 17:28a)
When you seek God with all your heart, you begin to understand that He is the greatest part of your life and who you are (your “being”). When you seek Him through learning His Word and loving obedience, He becomes your spiritual oxygen and the heartbeat of your existence.
When you know God, you desire Him—more than life.
