The extreme hatred and divisiveness that dominates our nation’s culture right now, can be extremely depressing, or—it can be one of the greatest opportunities we’ve ever had to give the people of our country true and lasting hope. To GIVE hope—we must HAVE it. There is only one object of hope who is steadfast and sure—and that is God. He NEVER changes. He ALWAYS keeps His promises. God is faithful. He is truth. He loves us more than we love ourselves.
To make God the greatest object of our hope, we must WORSHIP Him above the gods of gold, prestige, sexual pleasure, worldly comfort, power, or—anything else. He, rather than these false gods, must be our most passionate motivation for everything we do and say! He must be our love. We, as individuals must return to Him as our security and ultimate source of power.
It is an act of defiance against God to trust in anything more than we trust Him; and when we defy God, we destroy the connection to our GREATEST SOURCE of hope.
The words of George Washington in America’s first inaugural address in 1789 were:
“The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself hath ordained.” We must return to God to have His blessings and protection. Neither our wealth or our government will save us.
When our greatest love is God—He becomes our greatest hope:
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, [no other god is more important] the people whom he has chosen as his heritage! The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.” (Psalms 33:12-22)
Each person who makes God their most precious object of worship becomes a shining beacon of true and lasting hope for others. And then…each individual whose greatest hope is in God, collectively become the strength of our Nation.
