Don’t you want to HEAR the Creator of all things and all life—speak to you? Do you want to SEE HIM??? So the question is—HOW can you??? (This devotional is a follow up to the one from yesterday.)
To SEE and HEAR our HOLY God—we must ALSO be HOLY.
Like Adam and Eve after they sinned and hid from God in the Garden—our sin makes us want to hide from Him. But God says:
“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:23-24)
Our pet sins steal our best life. Sin steals our identity; it steals our joy; it steals love; it makes us stupid; and worst of all—it steals our desire to be close to God. If we are smart, we will HATE our sin because it robs us of the best things in life!!!
It’s a battle we ALL fight because even after we are born again, we are still strapped with three enemies—the devil, our flesh, and the world—that VICIOUSLY fight against our born-again spirit—which desires God. If you are NOT born-again then you are dead in the water in the battle against sin. But even as Christians, the enemies lie to us and tells us OUR ways are better than God’s ways! Paul describes this battle so well in Romans:
“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, [born again spirit] but I see in my members [flesh] another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members [flesh].” (Romans 7:18-23)
Take hope! The enemies who wage war against your desire for God are NOT more powerful than the Holy Spirit Who dwells within you. If you don’t have Jesus within you—by being born again—then you have no defenses. For example, a guy I know who has an addiction to sex told me he was trapped and couldn’t stop himself; and when he tried, he just wanted it more. Without Jesus in our heart our addictions will eventually destroy us; AND we ALL have them!
BUT—When we have Jesus inside us, we can overcome! We have the ability to live as the “pure in heart” and SEE God—like we talked about yesterday. Jesus said,
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)
We must be BORN-AGAIN; and once we are, we then must be INTENTIONAL about our relationship with God—much like building a good marriage. We must pursue our relationship with Him and not be spiritually lazy! We must seek to learn His Word so we know the truth about wrong and right. If not, we remain ignorant and we will just rationalize and justify our enslaving addictions.
Living in truth brings us closer to God:
“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (Psalms 145:18)
I struggle with sin—just like Paul did—and just like you do. But, God’s Spirit lives in me and so some of my prayers have been: Asking God to help me desire His presence; asking God to help me hate sin; asking God to help me identify the idols in my life; and asking God to show me how to keep Him on the throne of my heart. What’s exciting is that God is answering my prayers and my desire for Him is growing stronger and stronger. I am beginning to hear and see more of Him and it’s so exciting!!!
When we learn the truth AND follow it, God’s presence enlightens us; and He replaces the ravages of sin with the blessings of Heaven.
