Is it possible to know you are completely loved by someone—all the time? Do you really expect perfect love from an imperfect human—like a spouse, child, parent, or friend? We get married with high expectations—and then they are crushed. We have children and give them everything—but they aren’t equipped to give us the love we need. Children expect parents to give them the love they are seeking and yet—we fail them. Most human relationships are fraught with frustration and failure. WE don’t even love others the way that we expect THEM to love us. Yet, we continue to burden each other with an expectation for the kind of love only GOD can provide.
Our greatest expectation for love must be in God, who IS LOVE.
The Bible says:
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16)
We cannot live apart from God—who is love—and ever expect to find His deep and abiding love. Thus, if we want to feel completely loved—all the time—we must love God all the time. What does it mean to love God? Jesus said:
“Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” (John 14:21)
How is obedience to God connected with—knowing you are loved by Him? Think of it this way: What we love is what we serve; indeed, it’s often what we enslave ourselves to! The question is—will it love us back the way we were created to be loved? For example, if you love your job—you submit to it—you’ll do whatever it takes to obtain success in it—right? Or, when you fall madly in love another person, you give, give, give, and—submit and conform your life to please them in order to demonstrate your love. In fact, sometimes you become so blind in love, you do shameful things you would have never imagined doing! The point is—love ALWAYS involves obedience—and sometimes, it even results in slavery.
The BIG questions are: WHO is worthy of our greatest devotion and our whole heart? Who will best care for our heart and give us the love we so desperately long for?
Is there anyone who has loved you like GOD?
When we realize that God is the ONLY one who will love us the way we were created to be loved, we GLADLY seek to surrender our entire life to Him. We become desperate to find more ways to spend time with Him. We are horrified to think we would do anything to offend His Holy nature. We passionately desire to be CLOSE to Him. By instructing us to obey HIM—Jesus was teaching us how to HAVE what we desperately SEEK. You see, we all obey someone or something—but none can give us love like God! He loved us first.
“We love Him because He first loved us.” (I John 4:19)
God loves us more than anyone—even more than we love ourselves!
