What’s the difference between “knowing about God” and “knowing God?”

Well, ask yourself—what’s the difference between “reading a love story”and “falling in love?” It’s experiencing a relationship—right? When we study God without knowing Him, we’re simply intellectualizing His attributes and the things He does. When we do this—without knowing Him—it can actually be DANGEROUS! WHAT??? Yes—it’s like reading a great love story and knowing it will NEVER happen to you. It makes us cynical because we think it’s too good to be true and so—we walk away.

Religion without relationship gives us a false impression of God and can deter us from knowing Him!

For example, before I had a relationship with God, I read the Bible and I believed He was primarily—a terrifying judge. So, rather than trying to get to know Him, I tried to follow as many rules as I could to “make Him happy” and try to “escape His wrath.”

This is an insane view of God!

God created us to have a relationship with Him. He calls us His children!!! Most parents want the best for their children. God is a much better parent than we are because—HE is love. Jesus said:

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew‬ ‭7:7-11‬)

To know God, we must first become His children by receiving the gift of salvation. Then, the key to having this relationship with God is to build our desire for HIM. We must love Him MORE than we love the sin of following our own way. He doesn’t embrace our sin—why would He? It crucified His beloved Son. As long as we continue to live in doubt, worry, fear, hate, jealousy, sexual sin, idolization of good things, gossiping, or otherwise controlled by our fleshly desires—we will not be able to be close to Him.

But—God desires us more than we know!

God longs to be close to each of us; He proved it on the cross when He gave everything—so we could KNOW Him.

When we know God, the goodness of His love draws us away from the slavery of sin. When we know God, we KNOW we are loved and we receive His wisdom, love and power. Knowing GOD is much more than knowing about Him—it is the relationship of a lifetime!
